What is this test about?

To find out your risk of developing breast/ Ovarian cancer with genetic testing. This test looks for changes in the DNA code of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which are strongly associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) risk. Variants or mutations in these genes can significantly increase your breast/ ovarian cancer risk.

Who can order this test?

You could be at increased risk of getting an inherited gene mutation which elevates the risk of breast and ovarian cancers and a genetic test nominee, if you have:

  • Personal history of diagnosed Breast/ ovarian cancer
  • Medical history with two or more cancer forms at age <50.
  • Family history of breast cancer in men.
  • A blood relative with a history of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer or prostate cancer.
  • A blood relative who had genetic testing and was found to have a gene change that increases the risk of breast cancer.
  • Anyone who is curious to understand their genetic predisposition to cancer.

How is this test different?

This test is performed using Saliva sample without any need of Doctor’s prescription or a blood draw. This means that you can order this test from the comfort of your home.

Does this test ensure comprehensive risk testing of cancer?

This test investigates changes in BRCA 1 & 2 genes. However, there are other genes that increase the risk of breast cancer or other cancer types.

A multigene panel test looks for changes in many different genes. It can be used to look for changes in the BRCA genes and other genes that increase the risk of various cancer types. For further details click here

How will the test results help me?

Early screening is the key for cancer management. A positive test result means you have a higher-than-average risk of developing breast, ovarian and other cancers. Knowing you have a gene mutation also means you can take steps to lower your risk and help prevent cancer. You can discuss the results with your health care provider who in turn will chalk out an efficient management strategy personalised to your health needs. These may include life style modifications, enhanced screenings, risk reducing surgeries (prophylactic oophorectomy/ mastectomy) or chemoprevention. You may also choose to have no treatment at all, but that will be an informed decision you will make for yourself.

Genetic tests can reveal information not only about the person being tested but also about that person’s blood relatives. Family members may have different opinions about whether they want to know about the inherited change that increases their cancer risk.
